Dear Johnny,

Walking through the halls all I can think about is the impending end of my high school career. While all my friends say the same thing over and over again “I’m glad to to be done and get outta here!” I understand what they mean but I still get the feeling of nostalgia, I think I’m going to miss high school and how simple and easy it is compared to the adult life I’m about to enter. Any tips on dealing with graduation would be much appreciated!

Sincerely, An Almost Adult

An Almost Adult,

The transition from high school life to adult life is really hard for anyone. You’re not doing this alone. In high school, we’re sheltered from the “big bad world,” and it’s totally normal to miss that when you graduate. Leaving a life you’ve lived in comfort for 12 years and then suddenly changing is no joke. But there are ways you can deal with it. First of all, make sure you have everything ready for graduation. Plan everything up to the date: your cap and gown, your schoolwork, and anything else you might need. Get those things ready so it’s one less thing to worry about. Next thing: Live in the moment. Graduation is a huge event in your life that signifies a big change: from child to adult. And that can scare the heck out of anyone. Moving to a new phase can trigger feelings of nervousness, anxiety, and uncertainty. Just the thought of making new friends, starting life in a new college or job, and recreating your identity as a newborn adult can overwhelm you in an instant if you stop and dwell on it. Don’t do that. It’s totally okay to feel doubts about your future. But don’t let your worry rob you of the thrill that is high school graduation. Relish the present, and let tomorrow worry about itself. You’ll be amazing, Departing Jet.

Best of luck,

Johnny the Jet
