The D23 Expo 2015 brought much excitement to the Disney fan community. Disney announced many major plans that could potentially change the company forever.
The fourth one to date, The D23 Expo was held in Anaheim, California near Disneyland at the Anaheim Convention Center. Highlights this year included celebrating the 60th anniversary of Disneyland’s opening, announcements of upcoming films, and many exciting parks announcements.
The D23 Expo was held on the weekend of August 14th-16th, 2015 to D23 members and media. The panels were occasionally live streamed and often live tweeted. Disney’s weekend was full of many announcements.
At the movies panel, clips from The Good Dinosaur and the new Inside Out short, Riley’s First Date, were shown. News about Zootopia, Moana, Finding Dory and Toy Story 4 was also revealed. Moana will follow Disney’s first Polynesian princess, Moana who sets off an epic journey when her family needs her help. Toy Story 4 will expand on Woody and Bo Peep’s romantic relationship and Finding Dory had its first screenshot revealed. Marvel Studios also announced news for Captain America: Civil War and released a screenshot for Doctor Strange.
However the biggest news was Star Wars related. Near the end of the panel, Disney CEO, Bob Iger announced plans for Star Wars Land in both Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The 14-acre expansion will take place in a new land not yet seen on Star Wars films. There will be a ride that will let guests pilot Han Solo’s ship The Millennium Falcon and a dining experience themed similarly to Mos Eisley Cantina from the first film. No opening date was given.
At the parks panel, more details on Star Wars Land were given along with other announcements. Details on Shanghai Disneyland were shared and a look back at Disneyland’s 60 year history was presented. Toy Story Playland was also announced for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. At about 11 acres and will feature a Slinky-themed coaster and a ride similar to Dumbo themed to the green alien men from the claw machine.
Finally at the Gaming panel, many exciting things were revealed. Although most of the attention from fans was focused on Kingdom Hearts 3 and Star Wars: Battlegrounds, news on Disney Mobile apps and Disney Infinity 3.0 also left fans satisfied with the panel. A Big Hero 6 world was announced for Kingdom Hearts 3, and a Darth Vader themed PS4 was announced to coincide with Star Wars: Battlegrounds. Disney Mobile announced a theme park builder game titled Magic Kingdoms and Disney Infinity: 3.0 revealed 4 new characters, Peter Pan as the artists choice, Judy & Nick from Zootopia, and Spot from The Good Dinosaur.
The D23 Expo left guests excited for what Disney has planned for the next few years and ready to visit the new lands of Star Wars and Toy Story. The next D23 Expo will take place in August of 2017.
