Why do many of us resist change? While some embrace it and even strive for it, there are still many others who have a desire to remain at equilibrium, rather, the status quo. Is it because we are lazy? Are we so adamant on keeping things the way they already are? Is change too scary? Why do people adhere to the status quo?

First, let’s define what exactly is the status quo. It’s a shortened Latin phrase, the longer version being “status quo ante bellum” which means “the state before the war”. That also relates to that usual cliche of when someone at the end of those stories when they make a wish they later regret, then they would make a wish going “I wish everything would return back to normal!” Normalcy is what people are used to, and everyone falls into a standard routine to live his or her life by.

If even one little change occurred, one would be completely thrown off. Sure, people eventually adjust and warm up to the change, but that doesn’t change the fact that people initially resist. Rebellious spirits have the tendency to be defiant and ignorant about change, and refuse to go through with it until they finally comply. For example, the United States will never switch from the Imperial System to the Metric System. It has been attempted before, but it is too large of a change for Americans. Why? It’s because we’ve been living and utilizing the system for our whole lives. It’s very difficult to switch, it is too dramatic and would confuse everyone. It’s strange too, since the Metric System would be easier to use.

On the contrary, though, some find change appealing. If life becomes too monotonous, some people become bored and find that they cannot stick to a routine. Those people are the type to jump around jobs and travel a lot. It’s difficult for them to find something they want to stick to and not get bored with its mediocrity.

In fact, a lot of people can be judged on whether they can embrace change or not. If you despise it, you can be pinpointed as a stubborn and dependable person. You can be considered organized and someone willing to live life centered around routine. A sense of normalcy is required for you.

If you love it, you might have a lower attention span and get bored easily. Those enjoying the “zest of life” (as quoted from the star reading test) are energetic and don’t usually adhere to any routine. Everyday’s an adventure for them, and they’d like to keep it that way.

Of course, these are only observations. Are you a fan of change?

I think that change is a good thing and without it nothing would get better. Change can bring the end of some things but can jumpstart others. Think about it, if America never wanted change we would still be colonies. On the other hand change from some points of view is disastrous, for example Hitler and how he wanted to “change the world for better.”
