The lights dim. The orchestra plays. The animated voices of Lumiere, Cogsworth, and Mrs. Potts fill the dark auditorium. In an instant, the audience is fully immersed in the magical world of Belle and the Beast. James Clemens Theatre presents their second musical, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, truly a tale as old as time.

Belle (Kayla Braxton) enters into view from off-stage and immediately captivates the audience with her silvery voice. She is joined by the villagers as she capers around the stage. Townspeople fill the auditorium, streaming in from every entrance and singing and chattering excitedly. Immediately, the crowd is whisked away to the small provincial town where Belle lives.

The performance runs for about two and a half hours, with an intermission time of 15 minutes. In the Beast’s castle, the audience is introduced to several quirky characters that add comedic effect to the show. Lumiere (Hannah Rice), the French candlestick along with Cogsworth (Ethan Brown), ever the worrywart clock, crack jokes with each other. Babette (Becky Protos), the sultry featherduster, adds some spice to the scene with her “ooh-la-la’s” and her seductive charm. Each character lit up the stage with his or her antics, from the arrogant and loud Gaston (Tad Hutt) to the surly turned sweet Beast (Alex Walbom) to the small Chip the teacup (Tucker Pearson), rolling around the stage on skates. The incorporation of “future Jets in training” portraying small townspeople and cupcakes and cookies served as a cuteness factor, causing the audience to “ooh” and “aww” at the adorable sight.

Although the actors and actresses were the main focus, the people behind-the-scenes deserve an abundance of praises as well. Many small details are required for a musical to really create the perfect atmosphere, and one of the most important parts of the production is the stage itself. Each backdrop was meticulously painted, ranging from the inside of a tavern to the Beast’s castle. The props, like the ethereal rose and the clunky wood-chopping contraption also fit each scene perfectly.

Even with the occasional malfunctioning of the mic packs, the performance on the whole was outstanding. The voices of the actors and actresses were strong and clear, resonating throughout the whole auditorium. The costumes were well-crafted, with each costume matching perfectly to each character. Mrs. Potts and Chip were both dressed as delicate crockery, and Madame La Bouche was a beautiful dresser with mirrors. Belle’s iconic yellow ball gown glittered brilliantly under the stage lights, as did the Beast’s fancy coat. The orchestra brought the stage to life with sweet melodies of the musical, from the rowdy “Gaston” to the soft and angelic “Beauty and the Beast”.

The magic of Disney is quite evident in James Clemens Theatre’s Beauty and the Beast, and this musical is definitely a must-see for everyone. The heartfelt performance coupled with the heavenly music and the jaw-dropping visuals make this production worth the watch.
