We all appreciate the day off of school on the third Monday of January, but what really is the significance of this day?

Everyone is aware about one thing about Martin Luther King Jr: He gave the “I Have a Dream” speech on August 28, 1963.  This was delivered at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom– which was part of the Civil Rights Movement, where civil rights activists worked tirelessly to abolish discrimination against minorities and ultimately advocate for equality.

This holiday is to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., who was born on January 15th, and was a well known preacher and was one of the faces of the Civil Rights Movement. This is because due to his beliefs, he decided to take Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas of Civil Disobedience, and focused on non-violent protest. This peaceful way of protest proved to make a bigger impact than violent protest, such as that of the Black Power Movement (occurring after MLK’s death).

Among his other achievements, MLK received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 due to his part in the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, founding of the South Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, organized the nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963, and of course, the deliverance of his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at Washington. After he won the Nobel Peace Prize, he continued on to organize the Selma to Montgomery Marches in 1965– however, his life came to a close when he was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

We celebrate this day in order to honor his valor and determination in the fight for freedom and equality for everyone, and also the sacrifices he has made. This man has endured many beatings, went to jail 29 times, and did everything to move the Civil Rights Movement ahead.
