If you asked any teen in any school hallway this question, they would most likely tell you the school day is far too long without thinking twice about it. But the only information they have to back this up is their own personal opinions. To get an honest answer to this question, there are other factors that will be helpful in considering.

The average older teenager’s attention span is twenty minutes maximum according to wisegeek.org. Contrary to belief, anyone above their twenties has an attention span shorter than fifteen minutes. At James Clemens High School, we have hour and a half block classes, four and a half times as long as our attention spans. Not to mention that the entire school day is seven hours and sixteen minutes long, almost twenty-two times our attention spans. It can easily be seen how this may cause a problem.

However, there are many points during the school day when we are given a small break or at least a change of pace. In most classes, the teacher presents the topic for that day followed by a reinforcement activity to ensure we have learned what we needed to. Most of the time, we are not expected to stay on the same exact topic and activity for an unreasonable amount of time. Also, with refuel, we now get an entire hour in the middle of the day to take a break, go to clubs, catch up on some homework, or do whatever we need to do within reason. This does make the school day longer, but it makes it feel shorter to us because of how it is scheduled and carried out daily.

With this being said, the school day is not too long. We have to be at school enough to learn everything we are expected to, and not too long in which we would be completely unable to focus. The school schedule being used now is a great balance between meeting the wants and needs we have regarding our education.

The school day is at an ideal length as it is. Until problems present themselves, it should be left as it is. Many teens don’t want to go to school. That’s just the way it is. This does not mean the day should be made shorter if we still want to gain the knowledge and experience needed for us to be successful adults later.
