Abortions have been used as a form of birth control since the late 1800’s. Some people believe that abortions should be outlawed. Pro-choice is a viable right, because fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when most abortions are performed, a child should not be born into the world unwanted, and modern abortion procedures are safe and do not cause any lasting health issues.

Fetuses are incapable of feeling any pain when most abortions are performed. According to Dr. Stuart W. G. Derbyshire, “…fetuses cannot be held to experience pain. Not only has the biological development not yet occurred to support pain experience, but the environment after birth, so necessary to the development of pain experience, is also yet to occur”(McDonough). The abortion will not harm or cause pain to the fetus, because at this time in the pregnancy the fetus is incapable of feeling any pain. Dr. Anne Davis stated “…and what we know in terms of the brain and the nervous system in a fetus is that the part of the brain that perceives pain is not connected to the part of the body that receives pain signals yet until about 26 weeks from the last menstrual period, which is about 24 weeks from conception”(Jacobson). It is very rare and even illegal in 42 states to have an abortion at such a late stage into the pregnancy, so there is a very small percentage of abortions where the fetus will be able to feel any pain since they cannot feel any until the 24th week of pregnancy.

A child should not be born into the world unwanted. Stated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, “ unintended pregnancies are associated with birth defects, low birth weight, maternal depression, increased risk of child abuse, lower educational attainment, delayed entry into prenatal care, a high risk of physical violence during pregnancy, and reduced rates of breastfeeding” (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment). Having an unwanted child can lead to maternal depression, which in turn can lead to increased risk of child abuse, lower educational attainment, delayed entry into prenatal care, and reduced rates of breastfeeding. According to Roe V. Wade. “49% of pregnancies among American women are unintended”(Wade). This could lead up to 49% of women and their unwanted children suffering from the negative effects of an unwanted pregnancy, which is why no child should be born unwanted.

Modern abortion procedures are safe and do not cause any lasting health issues. According to the National Cancer Institute, “the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist all refuted the claim that abortion can lead to a higher probability of developing breast cancer”(American). These three organizations have proved through facts and studies that abortions do not increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Stated by the New England Journal of Medicine, “abortions induced by medications do not increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, preterm birth, or low birth weight babies in future pregnancies…”(Gordon). This states the fact that abortions will not cause any abnormalities such as ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage in future pregnancies, which proves that abortion procedures are safe and do not cause lasting health issues.

Pro-choice is a viable right, because fetuses are incapable of feeling any pain when most abortions are performed, a child should not be born into the world unwanted, and modern abortions are safe and do not cause lasting health issues. If denied an abortion, it could cause more negative actions than abortions do. Abortions should be kept legal, because women have a viable right of choosing to have a child or not.
