There’s just this fun and educational vibe that comes out of this movie, I can’t put my finger on it however. It’s really not hard to get caught up in this courtroom drama, with astounding performances by a fantastic cast lead by Chadwick Boseman (played important performances as historical people such as Jackie Robinson in the movie 42 and James Brown in Get On Up). The past performances of Boseman have greatly influenced him in this film as he executes the character of a young hotshot NAACP lawyer Thurgood Marshall.

Boseman’s character Thurgood Marshall is sent off from NAACP headquarters in Harlem to a small town in Connecticut to defend a African American Chauffeur Joseph Spell (“This is Us” star Sterling K Brown) accused by a wealthy socialite (Kate Hudson) of rape and attempted murder. Marshall is directly sent to Josh Gad’s character Sam Friedman, a Jewish civil suits lawyer, to hire him to work with Marshall on the case. In their way is a judge (James Cromwell), who bars Marshall from presenting the arguments in the case, and a prosecutor (Dan Stevens) who becomes increasingly peevish as the case progresses.

What I really liked about the film is how it had a happy ending: in a typical movie of the same historical drama, the ending is usually very sad and depressing. It felt extremely nice to walk out of the theater with a satisfied feeling.

Overall, this was a great film with outstanding actors and a great plot dedicated to a civil rights pioneer. It also had an excellent script and good cinematography. The director Reginald Hudlin executed this real story beautifully.
