Honestly, why do people care so much about other people’s business? We all have that one “friend” who constantly asks us what our GPA is, what our class rank is. Why do they care about your life on this obsessive level?

Being a senior, I get this a lot from “friends,” also known as acquaintances. I do not understand how people DO NOT realize that  they are their own competition, that they can only beat themselves to get better. All the time now, all people do is compete with others and from my own personal experience, doing so will only drag you down as a person.

So, I went ahead and did some research for you guys to solve this mystery, once and for all. Ok, so my research includes reading the Huffington Post’s article, but hey, it really helps!

People feel two different ways about the competition in high school.

  1. They hate it. They feel that the education system is not about competition at all.
  2. They want to use this system to their advantage. They want to win this “game” of competition.

If you fall in #1, here are some tips for high school:

  • Do not share your grades/class rank/GPA with anyone. Yes, even your friends! I am sorry, but people tend to not hold the secrets you tell them within themselves, so be careful.
  • Have a social life. Try to have fun in high school. In other words, do not talk about colleges and colleges (did I mention colleges?) with your friends. Talk about fun, random things – Star Wars, Trump, or whatever you think is entertaining.
  • Find friends who fall in #1 too. Being associated with all the #2s will cause you to become more stressed. I am not saying to never talk to them, but to control how much time you spend with them.
  • Choose clubs/sports that you truly feel interested in. Do not become officers in a club that you absolutely hate. Put in your effort on something you love and something that you can truly impact. Again, try avoiding surrounding yourself with type #2s too much!

If you fall in group #2, here are some tricks for you:

  • Talk to people who used this competition to their advantage. This can be your parents, some people who graduated high school already, or someone who is a senior to you. They can actually be pretty knowledgeable and provide guidance for you.
  • Choose clubs/sports that you truly feel interested in. Do not become officers in a club that you have no interest in. Put in your effort on something you love and something that you can truly impact.
  • Find what makes you different from others and use it to your advantage. Utilize this difference in you to make an impact in high school and truly look good to colleges.

Honestly, I am a little bit of a mix of both of these. It is all about learning about yourself and what works for you. I hope this article helps you, because I would love this advice if someone gave it to me.
