It’s the end of the year and the end of a freshman’s first year as a high schooler. I was interested in what a freshman had to say about their first year, and I had the opportunity to talk one on one with a freshman. Her name is Subrata Satyal. Let’s start…

What’s the biggest difference between high school and middle school?

The biggest difference between middle school and high school is the difficulty of classes and Refuel. In middle school, you didn’t really have much homework and everything was taught very slowly and thoroughly. As for high school, everything is taught rapidly. For lunch, middle school was only 30 minutes, where at JC, we have a one hour lunch and you can go anywhere in the school and sit in the courtyard outside.

What’s your favorite thing about James Clemens? What’s the worst thing?

My favorite thing about JC is Refuel. It gives you a choice to go to club meetings and get the help you need from your teachers. My least favorite thing is how crowded the halls gets. Some people walk really slow and it kind of gets annoying because you have to get to class on time.

What clubs/activities have you done?

Currently, I am a part of band and Paws for a Cause. Band is my favorite thing about school, we always do fun things and everyone in there is always there for you. I’m also in Paws for Cause. We fundraise and volunteer at our local animal shelters.

Do you have any of the advice for rising ninth graders?

My advice would be to try your best on everything that you do. It is very difficult in high school and what you do now will impact the rest of your life since now affects college and college affects your life.

If you could what are some things you want to change about your freshman schedule?

I wish that I had signed up for a medical class since I wanted to do something related to medical when I grow up, but other than that I’m very happy with the schedule I had this year since I got to be in Spanish and Spanish is one of my favorite classes.

How would you rate your experience as a freshman, please elaborate?

This year I would rate it as a 9 out of 10, it’s been my favorite year out of all the years I have gone to school! I have a lot of friends and band has been my favorite. I look forward to it every day.

What have you learned this year about high school that you will carry through the rest of your high school career?

I learned that it’s difficult and I have to strive to do my best no matter how difficult it gets.

What is a question you would ask a senior?

One question that I would ask a senior would be about AP classes. How do you manage them and what would you do better if you could take the classes again?
