    If you have the symptoms of the stomach bug or flu, PLEASE STAY HOME.

     With the cold coming into Madison, also comes the invasion of sickness, especially the flu and stomach bug. In the beginning of December, the state of Indiana found that over 800 kids were suffering from either the flu or the stomach bug and thus the schools were closed for cleaning and decontamination of the flu and bug virus. Even some school areas in Alabama are being closed to clean out any case of items containing potential viruses. Teachers are asking students to use Clorox wipes to sanitize their chairs and tables. This illness is spreading fast; it has already cause 4 school systems to close, including: Albertville, Marshall County, Boaz and Guntersville on January 25th. With the cold weather, the flu and stomach bug can be caught by anyone. If you do not want to get sick, WASH YOUR HANDS after using the bathroom. The flu has also spread to 36 states. This is a serious problem. This year has hit high on the amount of people sick with either the flu or the stomach bug. In Arkansas, a total of 300 students were sick. Even a city in Louisiana, Marrero, faced 122 missing kids from Ray St. Pierre Academy because of illness. Please stay safe from these ailments by practicing good hygiene and avoiding spreading problems to others. The Flu and Stomach Bug has spread so much that it has hit parts of our school system. 

Symptoms of the Flu

  • Fever over 100.4 F (38 C)
  • Aching muscles, Chills and sweats
  • Headache
  • Dry, persistent cough
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat

How to Avoid the Flu

  • Wash your hands. Thorough and frequent hand-washing is an effective way to prevent many common infections. Or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers if soap and water aren’t readily available.
  • Contain your coughs and sneezes. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. To avoid contaminating your hands, cough or sneeze into a tissue or into the inner crook of your elbow.
  • Avoid crowds. Flu spreads easily wherever people congregate.

Symptoms of Stomach Bug

  • Watery, usually nonbloody diarrhea — bloody diarrhea usually means you have a different, more severe infection
  • Abdominal cramps and pain
  • Nausea, vomiting or both
  • Occasional muscle aches or headache
  • Low-grade fever

How to Avoid Stomach Bug

  • Wash your hands thoroughly. It’s best to use warm water and soap and to rub hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds,
  • Use separate personal items around your home. Avoid sharing eating utensils, drinking glasses and plates. Use separate towels in the bathroom.
  • Keep your distance. Avoid close contact with anyone who has the virus, if possible.
  • Disinfect hard surfaces. If someone in your home has viral gastroenteritis, disinfect hard surfaces, such as counters, faucets and door knobs, with a mixture of 2 cups (0.47 liters) of bleach to 1 gallon (3.8 liters) of water.
